Dr Big Mac aka Kekdu the Crab

Hi! I am Dr Big Mac aka Kekdu buddy for little ones to treasure and perfect for pretend play or story telling time. In fact, I am loved by kids but often scare the adults! 🙂
Some FUN Facts about Kekdu
1. There are over 4500 species of crabs that live in all the world’s oceans, fresh water, and on land. The Pea Crab is the smallest known species at just a few millimetres wide and the largest is Japanese Spider Crab, with a leg span of up to 4 m (13 ft)
2. Crabs are decapods (ten footed) from the crustacean family however, first pair are claws known as ‘chelae’. Some crab species can naturally autotomise (shed) limbs such as their claws, which then regenerate after about a year
3. Crabs are omnivores (eat both meat and plants), they feed mainly on algae, but also bacteria, other crustaceans, molluscs, worms, and fungi. The average lifespan of a crab is 3-4 years
4. Crabs have a distinct sideways walk, however, some can walk forwards or backwards, and are also capable of swimming. They communicate with each other by drumming or waving their pincers. Groups of crabs are known as ‘casts’
5. Crabs are super old! They showed up during the Jurassic period, 200 million years ago. And while pregnancy in female crabs lasts only 1-2 weeks, they lay 1,000 – 2,000 eggs!
